Quarantine with a Toddler

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

Are you wondering what to do with your toddler at home with you while you are trying to work from home? Not everyone is able to or comfortable hiring someone to help during the day or to send their child to daycare right now. This could mean that you are working from home with your toddler, which may not be the easiest. Here are a few ideas to help you with this process.

  • Create a schedule and routine for your child. This will help your child feel more secure and will help know what is happening next. This helps when you need to transition between activities and could be helped by giving your child a warning before the activity needs to end. This can also help you to know how to plan your day as well.

  • Provide them with opportunities to make choices and be independent. Children at this age are trying to be more independent and as a toddler there are not as many opportunities for this. When they are able to be independent, they are better able and more willing to cooperate with your schedule and requests.

  • Children at this age may have more energy than other children so it is helpful to find ways for your child to use this energy. While the weather is nice, can they play outside? What activities can they participate in while inside? There are different programs that can also help with this such as GoNoodle or Cosmic Yoga Kids. Both are free and will lead your child through different physical activities.

  • Talk to your children about what is happening. They can sense your anxiety or stress which may be higher right now. Talking about your emotions will help them feel more comfortable with this and help make it easier for them to process their own emotions. Also, spend some quality time with them each day, even if it not a long period of time. This will help them better be able to regulate their emotions and feel loved and comforted.

Remember that during this time, it is important to give yourself some more grace as it is hard to work from home with your children. Each day will not be perfect, but with extra grace and love, your family will get through this time.
